HOMEOWNER TIPS · CONTROL A/C & HEATING

How often should you change your A/C filter?

Start with a monthly check. The right replacement schedule depends on your filter, your home, and how much your system runs.

Check it monthly. Replace it when it needs it.

There is no single schedule that works for every house. Check your filter once a month, and follow the filter and equipment manufacturer’s instructions. Many disposable one-inch filters need replacement within 30–90 days, but yours may load up sooner. Thicker media filters can have longer replacement intervals; check their instructions instead of using the same schedule.

Pets, dust, and heavy use make a difference

Pets, remodeling dust, and long cooling days can mean more frequent changes. If the filter is visibly loaded with dust before its usual change date, replace it. A reminder on your phone helps, but looking at the filter tells you more than the calendar alone.

Use the right filter for your system

Match the required dimensions and install it with the airflow arrow pointing toward the equipment. A higher MERV rating is not automatically the best choice for every system. Filter size, design, and ductwork all affect resistance. If you want better filtration, ask us to check whether your system can handle it.

A new filter will not fix every airflow problem

Weak airflow, rooms that stay warm, or a coil that freezes can have several causes. If the problem continues with a clean, correctly installed filter, the system needs testing. Do not run it without a filter as a workaround.
