Why is my A/C freezing up?

Ice on your air conditioner means something needs attention. Here is what to do first and why the cause needs testing.

Turn cooling off when you see ice

Turn the thermostat’s cooling mode off. Do not keep lowering the temperature or let the unit keep trying to cool. Ice can block airflow and the system needs to thaw before it can be properly checked. Do not chip the ice or use a torch or other heat source to melt it.

Check the filter and visible vents

If your filter is safely accessible, check whether it is dirty and replace it if needed. Make sure furniture is not blocking return grilles and that supply vents are open. Leave equipment panels closed. A filter or blocked vent can be part of the problem, but those checks do not rule out other causes.

Airflow and refrigerant problems can both cause freezing

A dirty indoor coil, a blower problem, or restricted airflow can make the coil too cold. Low refrigerant from a leak or another refrigerant-circuit problem can also cause ice. We need to check the system to tell which issue is responsible. Ice alone does not tell you that it just needs refrigerant.

Tell us it is frozen when you call

Let us know where you see ice, whether air is coming from the vents, and when the problem started. Thawing can take several hours and can produce water, so mention any leaking too. Keep cooling off until the system has thawed and the cause has been addressed. We can advise you on the next step when you call.
